New: the Quark-Elec A053T - the world's first truly portable AIS transponder

Something new has come ashore at SmartMarine, and honestly... we're pretty excited about it. The Quark-Elec A053T Portable AIS Transponder namely, the first-ever AIS transponder with built-in battery, and that changes quite a bit how we look at AIS on board. No installation hassles, no loose power supplies, no fiddling with cabling.

Just take it, put it down, turn it on and you are visible on the water 👀

The beauty of this device is that you can take it anywhere. Do you regularly sail different boats, rent something from time to time, have a RIB or a small boat without a fixed power supply? Then this really is a breath of fresh air. Thanks to the hefty internal battery, you can up to about 15 hours sailing without even connecting a single wire. Ideal for day trips, short trips or if you just want to stay flexible.

No apps, no drivers, and no hassle! 😎

And then there's the WiFi option: it really makes it fun. The A053T creates its own WiFi network, allowing you to log in directly to the web interface with your phone, tablet or laptop. No apps, no drivers, no hassle, just open your browser and set everything up. You immediately see status, AIS targets and system info. It feels surprisingly modern for something that is usually quite “built-in and complicated”.

A fully-fledged Class B AIS transponder

Despite its compact size, this is a full-fledged Class B AIS transponder, so you both transmit and receive other ships as usual. Everything you need is in the box: antennas, cables, mounting strap... even the strap system is cleverly designed so you can literally attach it to anything.

Who is the portable transponder for?

Anyone who wants to be safe and visible without fuss.

  • Watersports flexible boating.
  • Charter sailors.
  • Suppers and kayakers serious about safety.
  • RIB enthusiasts who don't fancy built-in equipment.
  • Or just as a back-up on board: a portable AIS that you always have with you.
