When lightning strikes the mast of a ship, the lightning current travels to the deck. Any cables mounted on the mast (e.g. the VHF/ AIS / 4G antennas or navigation light cables) can be the conductor for the lightning current to enter and spread through the on-board system. This may cause damage to some navigation equipment at sea, or it may damage the whole system.
The QK-AS15 is designed to ground the wave of lightning strikes on VHF / AIS / 4G antennas. It reduces voltage spikes and conducts through the ground cable, protecting VHF and AIS transponders or 4G routers.
The AS15's coaxial construction ensures excellent high-frequency characteristics, broadband and low loss and VSWR. The built-in gas discharge protection element ensures fast response time and proper operation even after multiple lightning strikes. A ground cam and connections to the lightning protection enclosure ensure easy installation.
Connections and installation
Installing the AS15 is a simple process with just a few steps.
Both the antennas and the AS15 have impedance values, 50 Ohm or 75 Ohm. The AS15 impedance should match that of the antenna for optimum results. Most marine VHF/AIS antennas have the 50 Ohm impedance, but check this before installation.
Wiring
The AS015 is suggested to be installed inside the boat, in a dry and clean area, keeping it away from flammable material. Although it can be connected directly to the VHF radio / AIS receiver or WiFi router, we recommend having a 2-foot coaxial cable between the RF device and the AS15. This would save the RF device in case overvoltage/current from lightning damages the AS15.
Connect one end of the AS15 to the 2-foot cable or to the RF device. Both ends will work because the AS15 is bi directional.
Connect the other end of the AS015 to the coaxial cable connected to the antenna.
Grounding
Grounding the AS15 is extremely important, otherwise it will not function as intended. If the external antenna is startled by high-voltage energy, it will help ground the energy.
Attach the earthing wire to the earthing connector and use pliers to crimp the wire on the connector firmly. The other end of the wire should be attached to a grounding point. When installing the wire, avoid making sharp bends. It is recommended to use a copper wire no smaller than 10 AWG (> 2.5 mm diameter) and keep this lightning escape wire as short as possible.
